A cartoon sampler for Mid-April.
I’ve been fairly busy over the past little while, and Wednesday of this week was the first time in some time I was actually able to sit down and just draw and come up with ideas for cartoons.
Sometimes things come to me pretty easy, my over active imagination throws out something that’s pretty much done. And sometimes the time of year gives me stuff to work with (like Hallowe’en or Christmas). But usually what happens is I sit down with one of my many notepads and pens and frantically try to conjure something up.
I have my go to cartoon templates that you’ve probably seen if you’ve looked at my past posts. Therapy, not talking to someone until they’ve had coffee, the Lord of Eternal Darkness whose name is too evil to be spoken and his attempt to make friends… and of course my dog Bruce who regularly features in my work. But I like to try and mix things up too, with each sampler having one or two regulars and two or three more…. irregular?
So when I plonk myself down to come up with ideas I start by writing out any words or terms or phrases that come to my head. I love writing so it’s a fun part of the process. If you are calling yourself a creative then you can’t hide from the actual creative process of coming up with ideas. I throw a bunch of words on the page and build from there.
While the samplers I upload usually have 4 or maybe 5 cartoons, I’ve usually been working with a lot more ideas.
I recently took much better photos of some of my paintings and put them together in their place on this website. I like having my paintings and drawings with a stroy section as it let’s me show more of my work and explain what I was doing with it. What I was trying to convey and what the process was. You can scroll through a collection of my paintings and drawings here, a lot of them are available to buy as well.
Recently I had a piece hanging in the members exhibition of my local arts centre. It was this piece entitled ‘A Cat in a Coffee Shop Makes a Hilarious Joke‘.

This and more of my signs are available to look at in my Made to Order section alongside custom pet pieces and handmade greeting cards. You can get in touch through the contact form if you’re interested in buying anything.
The arts centre my piece was hanging in is Signal Arts Centre in Bray, Co. Wicklow. The are holding a fundraiser which started recently and I have 11 small pieces in it. There’s a lot of pieces still available to buy (over 300 were submitted) with the money going towards building repairs. It’s worth having a look through them and seeing if there’s anything you like.
In this sampler, another don’t talk to me until I’ve had my coffee, therapy, a barber’s real job, and post-Easter reflections.

There’s no such thing as time until we’ve had coffee.

Dress for the cognitive and mental wellbeing you want.

Part of a barber’s job is to listen.

Post-Easter reflections are a difficult but necessary part of the Easter Bunny’s life.
If you enjoyed these cartoons and want to leave me a tip you can support me on Ko-fi for as little as €2
